The cool on the hill: trapped ions in an EBIT

چکیده

The energetics of ions trapped in an Electron Beam Ion Trap is reviewed, with particular reference to axial escape of the ions. Measurement of temperature as a machine diagnostic is illustrated. Control of the escape rate is shown to be an effective way to produce ultra-cold highly charged ions and to drive the ions through a phase transition. The nature of this phase transition, particular to trapped highly charged ions, is discussed and illustrated analytically.
